How to Make Starburst Jello Shots
Full steps and measurements on how to make these Starburst jello shots are in the printable recipe card. This is a quick visual walk through on how to make.
Step One: Take your cups and place them on a cookie tray or baking pan. That way it is easy to move from table to fridge.
Step Two: Next in a small saucepan on the stove heat up the water on high, and allow it to boil. Or you can microwave until the water boils.
Step Three: Remove from heat and then stir in one of your colors of gelatin. Mix until it is fully dissolved.
Step Four: Now you will add in your rum and mix well. I like to use cold rum for this step.
Step Five: Pour the Jello into the cups about 1/2 way full. Then refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
Step Six: Repeat the steps and add a different flavor of gelatin on top. Then refrigerate again for another hour or hour and a half.
Step Seven: Once the Starburst shots are set place a mini candy on top of each gelatin shot.
Variations To Recipe
- Change up the variety of alcohol used. I used a white rum but vodka, tequila or other alcohols will work for this recipe.
- Use any flavors of Jello you want. They don’t have to be the Starburst jello.
- Add a dollop of whipped cream on top of the shots once they are fully set up. This adds additional sweetness.
- These are an adult treat, but you can do cold water in replace of alcohol to make kid friendly.
Recipe Notes:
- Make sure the cup of water is boiling to ensure it melts the gelatin. Then use cold rum to pour in at the end.
- Allow the first jello flavor to set up for 30 minutes before you pour the next second layer of gelatin on top. Otherwise the fruity flavor will blend together.
- Any plastic cups work. I prefer condiment cups, but any 2-3 ounce containers work.
- These can be made ahead for party prep. Make the day before you want to serve, so they are ready for your next party.
- I like to place on baking sheet or lined cookie sheet for easy moving from one area to the next.
- Place the lids on each cups for an airtight container to store in the fridge as they set up. Not covering them can cause your jello to take on flavors in the fridge.
Storing
Refrigerate – The jello shots can store for up to 5-7 days in the fridge. I find they are best eaten within the first 2 days of being made.
You do not need want to freeze these as it will alter the texture of the gelatin once it thaws from being frozen.
