How to Make
Full directions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post. This is a quick walk through on how to make a sheet cake with flowers.
Step One: Start by mixing up and bake your cake. Once your cake is done remove and allow it to cool completely.
Step Two: Next you will work on making your buttercream frosting. Then separate the frosting into a few bowls and add different colors of food coloring to each bowl. Mix to your desired colors.
Step Three: Put each color of frosting in your piping bags with different shaped tips. I will share my tips below on what I used.
Step Four: I started adding large rosettes using size 1M or 2D, which are star tips. Pipe out a star then make a tight circle around the star, to give it the rosette look.
Step Five: Next you can make a drop flower with a 4B tip. and then add in different designs as you would like.
Step Six: The key to this is making sure to fill the whole cake with designs of flowers, zigzag lines, and such. It will give you a nice full look.
Step Seven: Once the cake is frosted fully, add on some sprinkles if you would like.
Helpful Tips For Piping Frosting
- Never drag your piping bag or tip against the cake, or it will create cake crumbs potentially.
- Try to use steady pressure when you are adding your designs to the cake.
- If you lift up while squeezing it will mess up your design on the cake and make a mess.
- I used the 4B tip to make drop flowers in spots that were bare. It was what I used last to fill in at the end.
Storing Cake
Depending on the type of frosting you can either refrigerate the cake, or store at room temperature. I find that keeping your cake in the fridge helps to extend the shelf life of the cake and helps frosting from breaking down.
You can also freeze the cake if you would like. Simply place in a freezer friendly container and freeze for 3-4 months. Then thaw on the counter or in the fridge overnight.
