Ingredients Needed
Cocoa Pebbles – Reach for any brand, I love the cocoa pebbles, they are so addictive to eat!
Butter – You can use unsalted or salted butter for this recipe. As you can see, I reached for salted.
Pretzels – I reached for the classic shaped pretzels, so when I break them apart, they have some shape for the legs of the spiders.
Candy Eyes – You could also use frosting to make the eyes, but the candy eyes are a fun pop to the spider treat.
Marshmallows – Mini or full-size marshmallows work. I just use what I have on hand, I find they both melt down great.
How to Make
- Start by adding your butter into a saucepan on medium heat. While the butter is melted, lay out wax paper on a flat surface on counter.
- Once butter melts, add in the marshmallows, and heat until it begins to melt.
- When the marshmallows are fully melted, you can add in a few drops of food coloring (brown). This is optional, and it will add richness to the treats if you want.
- Turn off the heat. Pour in the Rice Krispies cocoa cereal.
- Make sure to incorporate all the cereal with the marshmallow mixture. It will take a bit to mix it altogether.
- Grab a cookie scoop and grab around 1/4 cup of cereal mix. Then work on shaping into balls. The Krispy treats will be a bit stick.
- Add on your candy eyes, in the front of the treat. Press in slightly and it will stick well.
- Break 2 large arches off a pretzel, and create the legs. You can use a toothpick to make holes to stick the pretzels in.
Expert Tip: Rub a little butter or spray cooking spray on your hands when you are shaping the cocoa pebble treats, that way it doesn’t stick to your hands.
Storage
You will want to store your Halloween rice crispy treat spiders in an airtight container at room temperature on the counter. They will last for around 3-4 days when stored properly.
The legs of the chocolate Rice Krispies spiders will go stale first, so just watch that.
You can freeze any leftovers from this rice krispie treat recipe. Simply place treats in a freeze-friendly container and freeze for 2-3 months. Then allow the spider rice krispie treats to thaw on the counter at room temperature and then enjoy.
Tips and Variations to Recipe
- Cereal – If you do not want cocoa flavor, use regular Rice Krispies and just color with brown food coloring.
- The brown food coloring adds more dark color but is not a have-to-have ingredient.
- You can use white frosting to make eyes, with a dot of black frosting in the center if you do not want to use candy eyes.
- If you are gluten-free reach for gluten-free pretzels so you have a gluten-free snack.
- You can use black licorice for the legs of the spider if you want.
- Ice cream scoops work great for getting the same amount of rice mixture to shape the spices all the same size.
- You could add peanut butter cups to the bottom part of the spider to look like the spider has a bigger butt.
- You can use your favorite Halloween candy to decorate the spiders if you don’t want them to look like spiders.

Go right ahead and freeze your Rice Krispies treats if you don’t plan to eat them right away. Just wrap in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. The freeze in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to three months.
Thaw on the counter, and enjoy.
For me it is the perfect ratio of marshmallows to butter in the recipe. The butter brings out so much richness when paired with the melted marshmallows!
You can but it is something I would not recommend. You will find the stale marshmallows will affect the flavor greatly of your treats.
