Helpful Tools For Recipe
Cookie Cutter – You can buy this cookie cutter for the center cut out in your donuts.
Dutch Oven – You need a heavy duty bottom pot so that when you heat the oil you get an even cook so the oil is consistent in temperature.
Candy Thermometer – Use a thermometer to track how hot your oil becomes.
Slotted Spoon – This is handy for placing donut dough in the oil and removing, allowing the oil to run out of the spoon.
How to Make
Step 1: Open up your biscuit container, and remove the biscuit dough. Then you will use a shot glass or cookie cutter to cut out a circle in the center.
Step 2: Stretch the donuts out a bit if you want to make a larger center hole. Place a cooling rack on top of a cookie sheet, so it can catch all the drips from donuts. Then add oil into a Dutch Oven or heavy pot. Use a thermometer to heat to 350 degrees.
Step 3: Drop in a donut or two into the hot oil. Let it cook for about 1 minute, then carefully flip to repeat the cooking process.
Step 4: Cook the other side of the donut until golden brown. Once done, remove carefully and place on the cooling rack.
Step 5: Let the donuts cool a bit, then mix up your glaze. Add milk, powdered sugar and vanilla in a bowl and mix.
Step 6: Then add drops of pink and purple in different spots. With a toothpick or knife do a swirl to create a swirl design in the powdered sugar.
Step 7: Dip your donut in the glaze, and lift up carefully. It will create a layer of colors!
Step 8: Then top with sprinkles and serve up easy unicorn donuts!
Tip: Don’t toss donut holes, fry them up as well! A bite-size donut hole is always a tasty snack.
Storage
Like any donut, these are best served fresh and warm. You will find the donuts firm up a bit once they are cooled down. You can store in an airtight container on the counter for 1-2 days.
For a fresh and hot donut, warm up for 5-8 seconds in the microwave. Don’t overheat or it melts the frosting glaze.
Expert Tips
Here are a few helpful tips for these homemade donuts with biscuits!
- Fry up the donut holes you make for little donut bites! They will cook really fast.
- Place a paper towel on top of cooling rack so when you place you donuts down it catches excess oil.
- Make sure your oil is 350 degrees. If it is too hot it will overcook the outside and leave the center raw. Or if too cool the oil won’t cook the donuts properly.
- I recommend not using the pull apart style biscuits, as they don’t work that well.
Variations To Recipe
- Skip the powdered sugar glaze and serve plain.
- Dust with powdered sugar instead of donut glaze.
- Sip glaze and roll in cinnamon and sugar, right after pulling out of the oil, so the mixture sticks.
- Make a different flavor of donut glaze to dip in, like maple, chocolate, etc.
- Air fry or bake instead of deep fry your donuts.
- After you dip in powdered super sprinkle with coconut flakes, nuts, chocolate chips, etc.
FAQs
When frying you will find the peanut oil, canola, or even vegetable oil are recommended. Olive oil is not as it will burn when it gets heated too high of a temperature.
You will want your oil temperature to read 350 degrees. Use a thermometer so you can adjust the heat if it begins to get too hot or you need to warm it up a bit.
It only takes around 1 minute per side to fry a donut. Or you will do less if you are frying up the donut holes you cut out. The key is to look for that golden brown color on all areas of the dough.
These donuts can be placed in the air fryer. I will share full directions below. But you will cut, place in a single layer, spritz with oil then air fry. Flip and repeat until the biscuit dough is golden in color.
Cook at 350 degrees, for 4-5 minutes. Flip then repeat. The dough needs spritzed with oil or it will not turn golden brown.
Donuts can be frozen by placing in a bag or container in the freezer. The donuts can store for 2-3 months if stored properly. Then thaw on the counter or warm up in the microwave.
